Minimizing the Environmental Impact of Servicing Forestry Equipment

Environmental safety measures have become increasingly important in all industries as we continue to learn more about the disastrous effects of poor environmental management. The growing need for environmental conservation has resulted in numerous advancements in the fluid power industry; including digital technology, hybrid-electric power, and less toxic fluids. Despite increased safety precautions, hydraulic fluids can still enter the environment through a variety of accidental exposures. These hydraulic fluids can be toxic to wildlife and can find their way into human-use water systems.

Designing the Future of Hydraulic Fluid Safety Measures

Fluid System Components (FSC) is aware of these issues and has partnered with our customers in the logging and forestry industry to help minimize the environmental hazards that come with servicing equipment in the field. The FSC team designed, manufactured, tested, and installed a vacuum pump that reduces hydraulic fluid spills during routine maintenance. A Gast Vacuum pump was utilized in the design to change the pressure contained in the hydraulic reservoir which creates a vacuum that allows for servicing of hoses or other elements without losing oil or fluids. Loss of fluids can be expensive and the environmental impact can’t be understated. If the fluids were allowed to empty the lines, pockets of entrapped air would result, causing erratic, spongey behavior of the entire system on startup. It also would create an unsafe operation until the trapped air is displaced or worked out of the system. This design has been fully tested and installed on various pieces of forestry equipment, giving our customer piece of mind and improving safety standards throughout the industry.
